BARILOCHE

GUIDE TO BARILOCHE

San Carlos de Bariloche, Argentina is the sister city of Aspen, Colorado. Located 3 hours south of Buenos Aires, it is South America’s prime playground for skiing, sunning on the beach, hiking, boating and fly-fishing. It was also Butch Cassidy’s secret hideaway back in the early days when they were running from the West.

We just love the place for its simple food and kind people. We’ve been in and out of Chef Francis Mallmann’s hometown for the last 13 years. It continues to inspire us.

MIAMI

GUIDE TO MIAMI

Miami Beach has been my second home for years. The Atlantic Ocean, its beautiful Art Deco hotels and the people who come here from all over make it Florida’s most exciting city. But, the best-kept secret are the fun day trips to the islands of Key Largo, Islamorada or Key West. Stop at popular Mile Markers to find the best seafood shack, waterside inn or fishing cove. My favorite haunts are: Cheeca Lodge & Spa, Shell World, Pierre’s restaurant, Morada Bay, Postcard Inn, Anne’s Beach and Little Palm Island.

My heyday in Miami Beach began in 1995 when I opened the Delano Hotel for Ian Schrager with restaurateur Brian McNally and Madonna. Afterward, I partnered with BD Morr Group to build the Townhouse Hotel, a chic Euro hotel designed by India Mahdavi. Then, in 2004, I opened Miss Yip Chinese Cafe and brought real Chinese food to South Beach. And, I launched BUCK15 Lounge upstairs, a hip club showcasing local artists and DJs. I’ve seen a lot of changes since then — from the Versace mansion on Ocean Drive, Art Deco hotel conversions, the skyscraper condo boom to the transformation of the Miami Design District, Wynwood, Brickell, Miami River, Aventura and NoMi. The hits just keep on coming.

Here’s our 2022 Guide to the “Magic City.”

GUIDE TO PARIS

After watching Ratatouille and Alice in Paris, who wouldn’t want to be in the City of Lights! Because I once lived there for 3 years, I still have a local’s perspective on my favorite home away from home. During CoVID lockdown, I suffered from extreme nostalgia as I watched Alice search for the best bonbons, croissants and steak frites in Paris. C’est magnifique!

Look at our guide and take note of the secret hideaways we found wandering the streets we love to get lost in, lingering in the markets and cafes and exploring la vie en rose in the most romantic city in the world.

LOS ANGELES

GUIDE TO LOS ANGELES

I love visiting Los Angeles for its laid-back vibe, its sunset views and incredible food scene. There are many great places to share a meal here — from Silverlake, Culver City, Brentwood, Santa Monica, Los Feliz, West Hollywood, Westfield Mall, La Brea Avenue to Koreatown and Japantown.

Thanks to my dear friends, the Tran family, for showing me their secret little spots in town to eat excellent food and have a good time. Another must-go pit stop is in San Gabriel, just 25 minutes west of LA where my other dear friend, chef Vincent Cheng (of Miss Yip Chinese Cafe), opened three delicious Chinese restaurants , Ho Kee Cafe.  Just his Peking Duck and Roast Pork is definitely worth the drive. Love Hong Kong comfort food!

But, what’s a trip to LA without a visit to my staples: Din Tai Fong for the best fried rice and dumplings; Chateau Marmont for cool cocktails; the Beverly Hills Hotel for a Hollywood breakfast; The Apple Pan for burgers and Café Gratitude.

So, tell us where you love to eat in LA. Let’s trade foodie secrets.

JACKSON HOLE

GUIDE TO JACKSON HOLE

Jackson Hole, Summer 2021 during the height of COVID was a memorable time for us. We forget how Mother Nature needs our TLC. We were excited to leave city life and get back to Yellowstone National Park and the Grand Tetons to splash around the lakes. And, sample the food.

Persephone Bakery was at the top of our list for bread, pastries, and coffee. The best burgers (!) in town, hands-down was at Sweet Cheeks Meats. This sustainable, farm-raised-fare butcher shop owned by husband-wife team Nick and Nora Phillips flips delicious juicy burgers from 11 to 2. Next, we stopped by Teton Village to visit friends at Caldera House, the super cute 10-room hotel at the foothills of Teton Village. Nothing like sipping a beer at the private club with a ringside view of the mountains. South Cable, the hotel coffee and pizza shop, is the perfect place to meet after a long day of hiking. Later, we took a gondola ride up with kids in tow then stopped by The Deck for French fries and cocktails. A coyote passed by. Our new favorite spot that summer was Coelette, launched by our favorite locals, Kevin and Ali Cohane of Persephone Bakery and Picnic. Tucked away on a side street in a historic Coe Cabin, Coelette served delicious locally- sourced snow-line cuisine with a curated cocktail list for all revelers. Hungry?

Check out our 2022 Jackson Hole Food Guide. Let us know if we missed anything.

TORONTO

GUIDE TO TORONTO

When people ask about Toronto, I say it’s a food mecca because the population is so ethnically rich and diverse. It’s a big melting pot. I grew up in the Bloor West Village, a neighborhood of Polish and Ukrainian shops. (I can still remember those smells.) The best way to try new cuisines and cultures is to take the TTC public subway and hop off in Greektown, Koreatown, Chinatown and the West Indian neighborhoods. Meet the people. On the ride downtown, stop at St. Lawrence Market, the year-round indoor farmers market where over 120 vendors sell specialty foodstuffs from Canadian products to European pastries, Montreal bagels, smoked salmon, the best meats, handmade pasta, fruits and vegetables. In winter, the Distillery is big fun — walk cobblestone streets lit with holiday decorations while sipping hot chocolate or a hot toddy.

So, Toronto is the perfect year-round, weekend destination, for food, hijinks or just some clean Canadian air.
